Fencing is a sport that goes back hundreds of years, and has its roots in old-fashioned duels. Today, fencing is an Olympic sport. It is an incredible workout for mind and body. There are many other forms of competition sword arts, including SCA broad sword duels and historical longsword competitions- all are based on the sport of fencing. Weapons used in traditional fencing are the Epee, Saber, and Foil. People of all ages and body types can enjoy and benefit from the exercise and strategy of fencing.
Plateau Fencing has classes for youths and adults, starting at age 8. Classes at this age consist of basic footwork, drills, and lessons on how to properly hold a fencing sword. After learning basic techniques and fencing etiquette, the students will experience how to take part in an olympic-style fencing bout, or match. All students will wear proper safety attire, including USFA regulation masks, gloves, chest protectors, and underarm protectors. USFA membership is not a requirement for class. Adult classes will consist of the same footwork drills, etiquette and sword training, learning eventually to safely bout with competitors, and participate in judged competition matches. Fencing teaches you strategy and quick reaction, which is why we also call it "physical chess"! |
Kurt Dunning is the chief fencing instructor at Plateau Fencing. His fencing experience started in 1998 while in Las Vegas. He learned fencing techniques from legendary fencing master, Mel North of Salle de Nord, and was a coach at many competitions. Kurt competed in USA Fencing meets and championships, scoring touches on world champions. He was a member of the Nevada State championship saber team in 2000, and scored the winning touch.
He holds a moniteur rank from the USFCA. He loves fencing epee the most, as the scoring target is the entire body, including the feet! |
